A new study in JAMA Dermatology tested AI models against 652 physicians on 1,117 realistic skin cases (clinical + dermoscopic images + patient data).
Results:
AI outperformed doctors with <3 years experience
AI matched those with 3–10 years
AI was still inferior to experts with >10 years (74.2% accuracy)
Experience clearly wins. Seasoned clinicians integrate subtle context and rare presentations that current AI struggles with.
As an allergist/immunologist who sees skin issues daily, I wonder if the same pattern holds in our field - does AI surpass novices and match mid-level allergists, but fall short of true experts with deep clinical experience?
AI is already a great supportive tool for diagnosis, education, and literature synthesis, but human expertise remains irreplaceable.
What do you think? Does this apply to other specialties too?
Future: Hybrid human-AI systems are the path forward.
